Conceived by AIGA in conjunction with Chicago based designers Studio Blue, the catalogue features innovative work selected in the organization's annual design competitions. It includes charts documenting the designer's creative process, essays contextualizing the work included and profiles of AIGA 2001 medalists Paula Scher and Sam Antupit. The designers pay particular attention to the curatorial presentation of the work included, and provide generous real estate for explaining each project's form, sequence and narrative. Yet the designer's voice is definitively not neutral. The catalogue's form plays facetiously with the conventions of book and information design. And the designers renegotiate the traditional boundaries between designer and author participating fully in conceiving and writing a significant portion of the book. Along with more than 1,000 illustrations of innovative work, it includes charts that provide insight into the designer's process. |

365: AIGA Year in Design 23 includes the finest design from the year 2001, with photographs of each winning selection as well as jurors' comments and extensive credits. The book pulls the collection together with contextual essays for each section, jurors' work and biographies, and retrospectives of the 2002 AIGA medalists, Robert Brownjohn and Christopher Pullman. Following AIGA's developing initiative to focus on the process of designing rather than finished artifacts, this year's annual also includes statements written by the entrants that illuminate the problem-solving challenge of each piece. The annual was conceived jointly by AIGA and Houston-based Rigsby Design. The book's rigidly spaced photographs and text blocks contrast with the expansive use of white and the combination of coated and transparent uncoated papers. Together, the deliberately chosen visual elements form an elegant, tactile book whose pages both educate and delight. |
